Our prognosis

With the Ruzek and Upton drama behind her (and in fact, they’re not even a couple anymore), next season should be a clean slate for Burgess. It doesn’t matter who her ex-fiance is dating and she’s not dating anybody either. The seventh season would be prime time to focus on the fact that Burgess is one of the most kick-butt people in Intelligence.

It’s been a while now since Kim was promoted upstairs for good, and she’s learned the ropes and is as tough as anybody. The best thing for her character would be to give her some of the strong cases she got last season, and get her a little more of the limelight. There’s no reason that Upton and Burgess can’t both shine; Chicago PD can certainly have two strong female characters, and nothing says one of them has to be featured more than the other.

Plus, the idea of a Burgess and Upton friendship is an interesting one, the Ruzek awkwardness aside. They both have something they can learn from each other, so if the writers want to have more Upton, why not partner her with Burgess? “Ties That Bind” was a cliche story, but why it worked was because Tracy Spiridakos and Marina Squerciati were so good together.

Burgess got short-changed in season 6 and there’s no reason for that to happen again. Marina Squerciati has come into her own over the last few seasons, and brings a whole lot to the show. Let’s see Kim pick herself up off the mat in season 7 and remind people that she’s not to be messed with.
