Norma Kuhling returning for Chicago Med season 5 premiere
Chicago Med is bringing back Ava Bekker for a final goodbye, as Norma Kuhling’s character will return in the Chicago Med season 5 premiere.
Ava Bekker’s story on Chicago Med is going to get closure after all. Norma Kuhling has revealed on Instagram that she’s filmed scenes for the show, confirming that Ava will turn up one last time next season.
While NBC hasn’t made any official announcement about Kuhling’s return, presumably she’ll be in the Chicago Med season 5 premiere, because that’s when Colin Donnell is scheduled to appear for the final time as Dr. Connor Rhodes.
Both characters had an abrupt end in the season 4 finale, after the network revealed in April that the actors had been let go from the series in a “creative decision.”
After Ava seemed to confirm that she had killed Connor’s father Cornelius Rhodes (recurring guest star D.W. Moffett) by giving him synthetic insulin, she left the hospital in a huff when Connor didn’t want to get back together.

It was an awkward ending that didn’t explain anything for either character, and the writers seem to have acknowledged that by subsequently asking both Colin Donnell and Norma Kuhling to come back for one more episode.
It won’t help the fan backlash toward dropping their characters in the first place, but at least there should be some explanation for why Connor and Ava are no longer employed at the hospital.

The question now is: what will Ava’s exit story be?
Kuhling’s photos show her in Ava’s scrubs, which means that the character is still working at Chicago Med—at least for part of the episode. That would suggest that Connor hasn’t come forward with the accusation that she murdered his father.
Are the writers going to have him address that, or any of the other things he believes she’s done, and she’ll be fired and/or arrested? Or will they retcon that, and suggest that it really wasn’t her fault? Either one is possible, because while a lot of evidence has stacked up against her, the show has so far avoided having Ava face any serious consequences.
Whatever happens, the character will get some sort of goodbye in two months. Check out one of Norma Kuhling’s Instagram posts below, then tune into the Chicago Med season premiere on Sept. 25 to find out exactly how Ava Bekker departs.
