Chicago Med’s Colin Donnell to lead Almost Famous musical
Chicago Med alum Colin Donnell is starring in the highly anticipated Almost Famous musical. Here are the details and how to get Almost Famous tickets.
Former Chicago Med actor Colin Donnell has made his biggest move yet since being written out of the series—he’s about to star in the new Almost Famous musical.
Donnell will return to the stage next month in a production based on the Oscar-winning movie of the same name, directed by Tony Award nominee Jeremy Herrin (Wolf Hall, Parts One and Two) and with new music by Tony winner Tom Kitt (Next to Normal).
He’ll play Russell Hammond, the freewheeling rock star portrayed by Billy Crudup in the film.
Solea Pfeiffer, who appeared with Donnell in the recent production of Songs For A New World, co-stars as Penny Lane, originally played by Kate Hudson. Casey Likes is set as William Miller, the 15-year-old reporter who goes on the road with Russell and his band.

The Almost Famous musical starts performances on Sept. 13 at The Old Globe in San Diego and is currently planned to run through Oct. 20. Almost Famous tickets for the entire run are on sale now here.
There are no immediate plans for the show to be anywhere else, so One Chicago fans will have to make your way to California if you want to be sure that you see it.
Of course, the best case scenario is that it becomes a smash hit and winds up touring the country or even heading to Broadway—but nothing’s for certain past October as of now.

But this is one opportunity One Chicago viewers should consider traveling to San Diego for. Fans know that before he played Dr. Connor Rhodes on Chicago Med, Colin Donnell was a theatre veteran who commanded the stage on Broadway. Some of his stage credits include leading roles in Anything Goes, Violet and Love’s Labours Lost.
Almost Famous is him in his natural element—and part of a busy summer that has seen him not really slow down since he was dropped from the show in a controversial “creative decision” about a month before the season 4 finale.
Donnell’s romantic comedy Sell By, which he shot before the fourth season, was released and has been making the rounds on the film festival circuit. He’s confirmed that he will be reprising his role as Tommy Merlyn one more time in Arrow season 8, which is also that show’s last season.
And he agreed to return to Med in next month’s season 5 premiere, in order to explain just how Connor is leaving the hospital. He’s already shot his scenes for that final episode.
While a number of viewers are still upset at his departure, the great news is that his talent has immediately been snapped up by other projects. The Almost Famous musical is fantastic news for anyone who’s a Colin Donnell fan, because this is what he does best—and there’s some seriously good people around him who should make this an excellent production.
He’s getting a big new stage, literally, and anyone who has the opportunity to make it to The Old Globe should snap up tickets while you can. They’re selling quickly and this is something that you don’t want to miss.
