Look back at where Chicago Med began this summer. Read our retrospective on the fifteenth episode as we rewatch Chicago Med season 1, episode 15.

Over the One Chicago summer break, we’re looking back at where it all began by rewatching the first seasons of our shows—and today we’re revisiting Chicago Med season 1, episode 15.

If you want to rewatch this episode along with us, you can find Chicago Med season 1 on iTunes, Hulu and DVD.

The fifteenth episode is titled “Inheritance,” and so it’s no surprise that the plots deal largely with family, and the difficulties that come with them.

While one of the main patients is afraid of turning into her father, who has a severe drug problem, April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) deals with her brother Noah (recurring guest star Roland Buck III) and his penchant for big ideas.

And Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) has a story with his sister Claire (guest star Christina Brucato), about their family’s frayed relationship.

But the best storylinein the episode involves Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), who ends up having to deal with another part of his past which has nothing to do with his family.

Will’s latest patient is someone he knows from high school, and the patient’s brother is also involved. As it turns out, neither of them were big fans of Will in their teenage years, and vice versa.

So there’s a lot of Dr. Halstead bristling here, but that’s not the first time we’ve seen that from Will, and Nick Gehlfuss is always great at feeling somewhat out of place and the effect that has on his character.

The further the storyline goes on, though, Chicago Med reveals that things aren’t always what they appear to be. And that culminates in another strength of Will’s: his willingness to push back, this time against another doctor. When you think the story is going in one direction, it turns around and heads in another.

Especially with Connor gone after the new season premiere, it’ll be interesting to see if the writers have Halstead fill that void of the doctor who’s unafraid to speak out. The show very much needs that, and that confrontation is an early indicator of Will’s strength, in part because he’s felt like he has been pushed around or misjudged a few times.

If you’re a Halstead fan, this is an episode well worth giving a second watch, and it slows things down nicely from the two previous installments that had a little less medicine involved.

Relive “Inheritance” by watching a highlight from the episode below, and you can see the entire episode on iTunes, DVD and Hulu.
