What does FBI season 2’s schedule reveal about the upcoming season? Look at how FBI fits into CBS’s schedule and its competition.

With a new season of FBI, comes a new schedule for fans to look at and wonder: What does that mean? How could it affect the show?

A TV show’s schedule is perhaps the one thing fans overlook each season. Where a show is placed and what it’s up against matter to a series’ success, and thus its chances for renewal. It’s not only about what’s on the screen.

Is it in a good time slot or a bad one? Will it end up getting preempted at some point? Is it going up against bigger or more highly-rated competition? Does it just not make sense?

So with all these questions in mind, it’s time to take a look at the FBI season 2 schedule and see what we can find out.

More from One Chicago Center

Time slot: Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT

History: It’s business as usual for FBI, which comes back to the same time slot where it immediately was a hit for CBS. The series wound up being the top new scripted show of last fall, and viewers will be easily able to find it right back in the same place.

That being said, the show set a very high bar last season with live ratings in the 8-9 million area (often even higher than NBC’s One Chicago franchise!) so will CBS be expecting those same big numbers and thus raise the bar for the show’s future?

Can it beat those ratings in its sophomore season? Or how will the second time around unfold, after a freshman year where just about everything went right for the newest addition to Dick Wolf‘s TV empire?

Direct competition in the same time slot: Mixed-ish and Black-ish (ABC), This Is Us (NBC), Empire (FOX), Arrow (The CW)

Competitive landscape: This season could be a lot of fun. Of all the Dick Wolf shows out there, FBI has the most interesting competition. There’s ABC‘s highly promoted second Black-ish spinoff, the final season of Arrow, NBC‘s critical darling This Is Us, and Empire returning to FOX on a new night after off-screen controversy for one of its former stars.

Nothing really courts the same audience, but every show on that list has a reason to watch it and plenty of attention as we start the fall TV season. If you’re a TV fan, there’s really not a bad option in this time slot.

That being said, FBI season 2 is the only procedural/crime drama airing at 9 p.m. so anyone who wants a procedural is going to go to CBS without question. The biggest threat is probably This Is Us, which is introducing a lot of new cast members and always gets a lot of attention in the press, but that’s a show that a lot of people binge as well.

Prognosis: Look for Dick Wolf’s newest franchise to have another strong season. Even if it doesn’t quite reach the 9 million mark it was able to achieve during last season, it’ll still bring in a sizeable portion of live ratings. And though the competition is tough, the fact that it’s so varied should work in our show’s favor.
