What will happen

Look for a continued emphasis on Emily Foster’s romantic life when Chicago Fire returns. We saw the show making sure fans knew she was bisexual, even when mentioning it didn’t add anything to a scene, so that’s clearly an angle the writers are using early and often.

It’s also worth noting that Foster is the only main character not in a significant relationship at the moment, and One Chicago characters usually don’t stay single for long. It would be no shock at all if she got a new love interest in season 8, and if that love interest was a woman.

That’d actually be quite cool, since there hasn’t been a lesbian romance with a main character for years, going back to Leslie Shay (Lauren German) and her ex-girlfriend Clarice (recurring guest star Shiri Appleby). But hopefully Foster’s storyline will be better than Shay’s, which saw her getting her heart broken again by an ex who really didn’t know what she wanted.

Foster and Sylvie Brett’s (Kara Killmer) friendship will also obviously continue to grow. Look for Emily to give Brett some feedback on her surprise engagement, and if she’s making the correct choice to move on from her feelings for Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer). Since Foster is also an old friend of Brett’s now-fiancee, she might be in a slightly awkward position if Brett starts having second thoughts. Or will she be the one who helps Brett make the right decision?
