Where we left off

Brett’s world got turned upside down at the beginning of season 7 when she had to navigate both the loss of her old partner Dawson, and the arrival of a new one in Emily Foster. She wasn’t the only one who was grieving over Dawson’s departure, though. Dawson’s now ex-husband Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) was also trying to move on with his life without her, and it was through this shared loss that Brett and Casey began to grow closer.

Viewers got to see a more vulnerable side to Brett in these conversations between her and Casey. One of the biggest examples is in the Chicago Fire season 7 premiere, when she opened up to him about feeling frustrated by Dawson leaving without so much as a goodbye. We also saw Brett’s compassionate side in “Fault in Him” when she tried to convince Casey to seek help for his post-traumatic stress following a close call where he was nearly shot and killed.

Her relationship with Kyle went through some ups and downs when the lines between personal and professional became too blurry for him. Kyle thought that Brett telling him about Casey’s condition crossed a line, and he couldn’t keep skirting his responsibilities to Firehouse 51 because of his relationship with her.

This tension ultimately caused them to break up, but then Kyle surprised everyone—especially Brett—when he showed up at the firehouse in “I’m Not Leaving You” with a ring in hand. He proposed, and Brett accepted. As for what that means for her newfound closeness with Captain Matthew Casey, that’s anyone’s guess.
