Connor and Ava

Someone was finally doing something about Cornelius Rhodes’ suspicious death—but it was going in the wrong direction. Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) found out that the police were investigating his father’s demise. Except he was the prime suspect!

Connor met with Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) from Chicago PD, who had just finished speaking with Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling). She’d obviously said something to Atwater, because he immediately began questioning Connor about his father, even though Atwater has known him for years and you’d think would be a little more understanding.

Dr. Rhodes immediately confronted Ava, accusing her of killing his father. She called him “as delusional as your mother was” and asked him how much money he’d stand to inherit with his dad gone. All this happened in front of Dr. Isidore Latham (Ato Essandoh), which only made Connor look worse.

Latham soon told Connor that he was the subject of a Human Resources complaint. He, too, refused to even consider Connor’s point of view. At least Connor got a break when he forced Will to finally get treatment for his post-accident injuries. It was good to see some Will and Connor friendship moments, since that relationship was such a big part of Chicago Med‘s early years.

Later on, Latham called Connor and Ava together for an update on Cornelius’ case. He revealed that the insulin administered to Connor’s father was contaminated with chromium, which would mean that it could indeed be traced back to whoever killed him. Realizing she was had, Ava stalked off at the news.

She asked Connor to let her disappear, and when he refused, she took a scalpel and tried to kill herself in front of him. “We could have been so happy,” she said before slashing her carotid artery. “You ruined it all.” Connor and Latham took her into the OR, but Ava ultimately died on the table. She will not be missed.

Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) ordered that Ava’s death be kept quiet until they could “sort through this.” Since it’s, you know, kind of a PR nightmare for one of your staff to commit suicide.

Ava’s death prompted Connor to resign from Chicago Med, even though it also proved he was an innocent man. “I need to go somewhere where all I will be is just another doctor,” he said. Latham asked him to stay, admitting “I don’t want my friend to go.” Unfortunately for us, the bromance was over. Connor cleared out his locker and asked Goodwin to say goodbye to the rest of the staff for him. “You will be missed, Connor Rhodes,” she told him, speaking for all of us.

The very last scene of the Chicago Med premiere was Connor walking away from the hospital. Where is he going? What’s he going to do next? The show didn’t tell us anything, so you’ll have to guess where he’s headed.
