Chicago PD‘s Jay Halstead

Jay Halstead had one heck of a One Chicago crossover. In “Infection, Part I,” viewers saw him as one of the first people to respond when Stuart Anderson collapsed (and eventually died) from the bacteria at a Chicago Bears pre-game tailgate. He immediately went to work, trying to identify their patient zero when Anderson was still classified as a John Doe.

When more cases of infection were discovered, Jay served as the link between the doctors and basically everyone else. He was the one who responded when paramedics Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) and Emily Foster (Annie Ilonzeh) found two dead bodies, which officially signaled an epidemic. He kept the Intelligence Unit in the loop as the death toll grew, while also checking in with his brother to see how a cure was coming along.

During the second hour of “Infection,” Jay was also the one to discover that Will had been knocked unconscious by David Seldon. Despite his concern for his brother, he sprung right back into action trying to catch Seldon. He and Voight were the ones seen working with hospital security, calling for the building to be notified of an active security threat and trying to stop Seldon from leaving (it didn’t work, but points for effort).

Jay was the one on scene with Voight when the combined One Chicago first responders thought Seldon was targeting the Oktoberfest parade and instead saw blocks of empty city streets. And if he thought that was creepy, well, his day was about to take a turn for the very worst.

Towards the end of the crossover, Jay was one of the first to arrive when Seldon was finally located at BRT Health Industries’ corporate headquarters. He was the one who, totally on his own, confronted Seldon in the boardroom where the other man was holding hostages, several of whom he had obviously infected. That didn’t stop Jay, who agreed to drop his weapon and entered the room in hopes of talking Seldon down.

But instead, Jay Halstead had to literally risk his life to save One Chicago. Desperate to buy time for the rest of Intelligence, he agreed to self-inflict a wound and was seconds away from having to intentionally give himself a case of flesh-eating bacteria. Luckily, his teammates shot Seldon before that could happen, but the One Chicago crossover once again showed how much of a hero Jay is.
