2) Communication is key

Could we actually have Adam and Kim talk to each other more? They’ve certainly had their heartfelt moments over the last couple Chicago PD seasons. In season 5’s “Politics” and season 6’s “What Could Have Been,” we saw Ruzek be a shoulder for Burgess to lean on in times of distress. While that’s been a solid foundation to maintain their friendship on, it’s also a key piece that was missing from their romantic relationship the first time around.

Adam tends to bypass the emotional side of things and jump straight into the physical. If he wants the relationship to work in Chicago PD season 7, he needs to step up his talking game. And not the adorable, sometimes goofy one-liners he’s known for, but really talk to Kim about work, about what he’s thinking, about what he’s been through recently—anything serious like that would bring them closer together.

If Adam and Kim do grow closer this time around, then they could learn more about each other. These are two people who were going to be married at one point, but there’s still a lot they don’t know! More communication would not only further develop their relationship, but give Chicago PD fans the opportunity to learn more about their backstories.

Burgess was a flight attendant before she became a patrolwoman, but that part of her life was only briefly mentioned during Chicago PD season 1. And as for Adam, well, we don’t know much else about his family life besides his strained relationship with his father. What about growing up in Canaryville? There’s a lot to be learned about Burgess and Ruzek’s individual lives that they can still bond over, and that we could appreciate, too.

Communication would also enhance their relationship if they did ever decide to take that next step and get engaged again. Ruzek has been engaged three times, so he’s not afraid of commitment but there always seems to be something that derails him. If Burzek is going to be taken seriously, then it has to be a serious relationship, and that includes listening to what Burgess wants.

Kim could mirror his actions, and really take the time to hear Adam out. She could possibly delve into the reasons why his previous engagements (theirs included!) ended on such sour notes. If she can listen to his explanations, they just may stand a chance to make it right this time around.
