Chicago Med season 5, episode 6 takeaways: It’s All in the Family
What can Chicago Med fans learn from It’s All in the Family? Look closer at this week’s episode with our Chicago Med season 5, episode 6 takeaways.
What did One Chicago fans learn from the latest Chicago Med episode? Here’s what we took away from this week’s installment, “It’s All in the Family.”
“It’s All in the Family” featured Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) getting a court order that allowed her to keep treating her patient, despite locking herself in an ED room the week before. At least she finally broke off her engagement, but in a totally odd way.
If you missed any of this week’s episode or just want a refresher on the events that we’re about to discuss, you can catch up with our Chicago Med recap.

1) Was Natalie’s breakup weird?
Chicago Med fans were just waiting for the episode where Natalie found out that she wasn’t actually engaged. But when that moment came this week, it felt so off.
Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) finds out from Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains) that Natalie didn’t have the ring on her finger when she was in the ED at the start of the season. Will runs out to tell Natalie, and predictably gets yelled at for it.
There are so many things wrong here. First, Chicago Med cuts away from Marcel and Will too early; we don’t actually get to see the moment where Marcel breaks the news, which could have been dramatic on its own, if only to see Will’s immediate reaction.
Second, why does Will have to go and tell her? Why doesn’t Marcel go to tell her? Or at the very least, why doesn’t Will bring Marcel with him since Marcel’s the actual witness?
The answer to all of the above is likely because the writers wanted more Manstead drama, but it’s a dumb decision on Will’s part. He has to know that hearing it from him doesn’t carry any real weight because he wasn’t actually there; if Marcel was there, Natalie would take it more seriously because she knows he was her surgeon.
On top of that, Natalie automatically has reason to doubt anything Will says, since he’s her ex-fiance who is clearly not over her. So it was just sloppily handled in two different ways. It may have achieved the desired effect plot-wise (Natalie being single again), but this big moment could have been done so much better.

2) Goodwin deserves better
One of the subplots in “It’s All in the Family” felt like a massive hint. Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) treats a transgender man who reconciles with his ex-wife, and then goes to tell Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) how “two people who hurt each other badly” can end up being good for one another? Not subtle, show.
It’s also not what we’d hope for with Goodwin or Merkerson, an outstanding actress. The best story idea Chicago Med can think of for her is hooking her back up with her cheating ex? Yet one more romantic subplot on a show already stuffed full of them? This isn’t interesting writing at all if this is headed the way it looks like it’s going.
3) How many legal problems does this hospital have?
So Natalie got arrested this week, albeit briefly. Keep in mind she’s not the first person here to end up in handcuffs on the job; so did Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) a few seasons ago. Will was sued in the first season, and it seems like people threaten lawsuits on a regular basis.
Granted, it’s going to be heightened because this is a TV show that needs things to happen, but this hospital feels like it’s pretty regularly in some kind of legal trouble. Surely that would damage its credibility? If someone needs a subplot for Goodwin, how about dealing with that and trying to keep her doctors back in line a little bit more?
