What should fans watch for in Chicago Med’s midseason finale? Get ready for I Can’t Imagine the Future with our Chicago Med season 5, episode 9 preview.

After last week’s episode, the Chicago Med midseason finale has a lot of questions to answer. The question is, how many will it answer—or are there some ways it will leave One Chicago fans in the dark?

“I Can’t Imagine the Future” has a lot of loose ends to tie up. Almost every character has a personal crisis, whether it’s a Chexton psuedo-love triangle, Maggie Lockwood’s (Marlyne Barrett) dying boyfriend, or Dr. Daniel Charles’ (Oliver Platt) wife suspiciously being absent.

If we’ve learned anything from this show’s past finales, midseason or otherwise, it’s that the writers love to twist viewers’ heartstrings. And particularly this season, with the emphasis on the personal rather than professional, fans should brace themselves for an emotional episode.

But will any of that be good emotion, or will Chicago Med take the more dramatic route and just break viewers’ hearts again?

We know there will be at least one unhappy ending. Maggie’s boyfriend Ben (guest star Charles Malik Whitfield) is dying already, so he almost certainly won’t make it through this episode—barring some kind of miracle.

Though, as we discussed last week, this sad plot development may not have the same impact on viewers, given that their relationship has existed for all of two episodes.

The fact that Caroline Charles (guest star Paula Newsome) didn’t show up for a planned double date is also a pretty big sign that Chicago Med plans to have her cancer return.

That one may not get resolved right away; with as much screen time as the writers have devoted to that marriage, it might start here and end up being something that continues through the second half of the season. But the show wanted viewers to know Caroline was missing, so it had to be for a considerable reason.

Then there’s the second category of plots, where Chicago Med can take them either way. Will Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) getting her memory back be good for her, or just cause her even more angst?

Remember that no one knows what Natalie was going to say to Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), so we don’t know what she’s about to remember. If she was going to tell him she wanted to start their relationship over, well, he’s got a new girlfriend and a med student with a crush on him.

If she was going to tell him that she was moving on with Phillip (Ian Harding), then Phillip is long gone. Either way, Natalie’s not really going to get a big positive out of this, but at least she’ll have closure.

And what about Chexton? Is Chicago Med season 5 really going to set up yet another love triangle on this show? Especially one that kind of feels out of nowhere—Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains) may have a crush on April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta), but why would she feel the same way? It’s not apparent yet, unless you count her not being clear to him that she has a boyfriend.

The writers could make this much ado about nothing, with Crockett and April deciding that they have a good working relationship that needs to stay that way, and things just being blown out of proportion. Or they could go the other way, and have April feeling pressure in her relationship with Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) because of him painting this future for them—like the title—and she’ll break it off again.

The Chicago Med midseason finale could leave everyone unhappy. Or it could finally put a period on some of these many open-ended storylines. Either way, people will be talking about it by the time it’s over.
