There isn’t a huge amount to discuss when it comes to Gallo, since he’s only been part of the show for a whopping eight episodes! But as the latest recurring character to join Firehouse 51, he’s already had a bit of drama.
Gallo was introduced working with another house, and completing an utterly insane rescue that left everyone speechless. Since then, he’s also shown that same risk-taking behavior working at 51, and impressed (and frustrated, if you’re Boden) his new colleagues.
One painful thing to remember: his old boss revealed to Boden that Gallo became a firefighter because he was rescued from a fire as a child. Unfortunately that fire also claimed the lives of his entire family.
He may have a tragic history, but so far Gallo’s future looks bright. Let’s just see if he can get through the back half of the season without being in another life-threatening situation!

What it means
Chicago Fire has gone through a lot of incoming firefighters over eight seasons, but so far Gallo has acquitted himself well. Granted, the show made him look very good in his first episodes, but that’s a TV writing device; a series shows off the good side of a new character early and often, as the writers are trying to get fans to like the character.
Since the honeymoon period, though, Gallo seems to have fit right in. The show is writing more of him with previous “new guy” Darren Ritter (recurring guest star Daniel Kyri), and that’s a fun duo to see together, especially since Ritter was where Gallo is now. And Gallo has stopped doing crazy stuff, too, so it’s nice to see the show not just writing him as “hot-headed, risk-taking guy who does whatever he wants.”
The question remains: will we learn more about him, though, than just his family’s tragedy?
What’s next
Gallo is hard to put a finger on, and here’s why: we don’t yet know if he’s staying or going. As of One Chicago Day in October, Alberto Rosende was the only new cast member in the whole One Chicago franchise who hadn’t been promoted from recurring to series regular yet. NBC has not made any kind of official announcement that his option has been picked up since then.
That means Gallo could go three ways here: he sticks around as a recurring like Ritter; he gets promoted to series regular like Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) was a few seasons ago; or he’s eventually shuffled off, like Jason Kannell (Kamal Angelo Bolden) and many others before him. It’s just too early to call.
While we chew on that, the most important thing will be to continue to develop Gallo both on and off the job. As a firefighter, Chicago Fire season 8 shouldn’t be afraid to let him make mistakes, so we can see him learn and grow. And as a person, the biggest thing we know about him right now is one terrible moment in his childhood. What about some positive stuff? Or some stuff about who he is now? Hobbies? Friends outside work?
He’s still kind of a blank canvas, and there’s plenty of time to add some more colors.
