What’s happened so far

This season of Chicago Med has easily been the most prominent for Dr. Daniel Charles, as both his personal and professional lives have come to the forefront.

A large amount of screen time has been devoted to Charles’ personal life. He remarried his ex-wife Caroline (recurring guest star Paula Newsome) in the season 4 finale, and season 5 has shown us several scenes of them together, from the light-hearted to the more serious. On the lighter end of the spectrum, Charles had to deal with Caroline trying to push Bert Goodwin (GregAlan Williams) back into his ex-wife Sharon’s (S. Epatha Merkerson) life.

But on the more serious end, the Chicago Med writers decided to bring Caroline’s cancer back. The midseason finale established that it was terminal, and Daniel would be taking a leave of absence in order to take Caroline away on a final vacation—during which she could pass on peacefully. It was a heartbreaking scene for him to tell their daughter Robin (Mekia Cox) that her mother didn’t want her there.

Professionally Charles has featured in several cases, most notably dealing with a man who was letting social media dictate his care by offering him the chance to jump off the hospital’s roof. That got him a slap on the wrist from Goodwin, as that video subsequently went viral. For someone who lost his psych resident at the start of season 4, Charles has a bigger role in the show than he has ever had before.
