Chicago PD season 7 midseason report: Hailey Upton

What’s next

When Chicago PD returns next month, all eyes will be on Hailey’s partner Jay, as he fights for his life. The promo showed Hailey by his side during the ordeal, so it can be predicted that she’s the one who finds him bleeding out in the basement.

What would be interesting to see though is how Hailey interacts with Angela. Will she figure out that Angela is the one who shot Jay? If so, what would she do with that information? Voight and Kim can be seen talking to Angela in the promo, which begs the question: where’s Hailey?

Perhaps she’s waiting for news on Jay; maybe she’s battling guilt for not being there for him. She told Voight in the fall finale that she should’ve said something about Jay and Angela ASAP – and now with the horrific outcome, she’s got to have a lot of mixed emotions.

Those mixed emotions will most likely be about guilt, either for not saying anything or not going downstairs with Jay to get Angela. Considering TV Guide reported earlier this year that an Upstead relationship will be explored, Hailey may have some questions about her feelings for her partner.

Whether or not the writers push Hailey and Jay in that direction explicitly is unclear, but they have been “sprinkling it in,” as Jesse Lee Soffer has said in interviews.

Outside of Halstead, Hailey’s interactions with the rest of the team are a good source to draw from, especially since she’s now partnered up with Vanessa. Perhaps that could be a way to work in a more serious conversation between the two women: Hailey’s going to need someone there for her while dealing with Jay’s predicament.

Maybe Upton and Voight will have another scene together, as the two haven’t talked since Hailey’s tearful ponderings after her CI’s death. Hailey Upton really deserves to come into her own, no matter who she ends up with. Hopefully the rest of Chicago PD season 7 can make that happen for her.
