1. Gabriela Dawson’s return

What happened: Dawson returns to Firehouse 51, seeking out Casey to go with her to an event for the organization she’s now employed by. The two of them spend a night of passion together, after which she heads back to Puerto Rico off-screen.

Why it’s a WTF moment: Dawson’s second comeback in as many seasons is not a WTF moment in and of itself. Monica Raymund can come back to Chicago Fire as many times as she’s willing and able to do so; she’s an original cast member who gave six seasons to this show, and her character still means a lot to a lot of fans.

And Gabby’s return gave us more information about what happened to her brother Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) than Chicago PD ever did, too. (Did anyone else wonder what Antonio would think when his sister returned and he inevitably found out she slept with Casey? That must have been a fun conversation.)

The WTF part comes in the way the show handled Dawson’s return. The midseason finale made it exclusively a Dawsey storyline, when Dawson’s impact on Firehouse 51 went so far beyond just her relationship with Casey. We didn’t get to see any scene with Dawson and Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer), even though the two were best friends and Brett was harboring feelings for Dawson’s ex-husband.

In fact, we didn’t get a decent scene between Dawson and anybody else. She said hi to the gang in a brief moment at the firehouse, but there was so much more that could have been done. Gabby could have met her successor Emily Foster (Annie Ilonzeh) and passed on some advice. She might have hung out with Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and talked to her about what it’s like when a couple’s career paths go in different directions, since Severide was with OFI at the time.

And those are just two ideas. But it was a real surprise that Chicago Fire didn’t fully use Monica Raymund when it had her back. The Dawson and Casey storyline was a big one, sure, but things could have been so much bigger and more memorable if there had been just a few minutes to let Dawson spend time with other people, too.
