4. Marcel reveals that secret

Marcel again towed the line between personal and professional obligations when he worked a complicated car accident case alongside Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss).

In the Chicago Med season 5 premiere, Marcel stepped into the middle one of One Chicago’s biggest ships. He was the only one who witnessed Phillip Davis (Ian Harding)’s shenanigans wiht the engagement ring, and while he tried to confront Dr. Natalie Manning’s (Torrey DeVitto) “fiancé” about the slip, Phillip brushed him off.

What Marcel witnessed didn’t get immediately passed along to Natalie’s former fiancé Will, who was heartbroken to hear of her new engagement. One Chicago fans saw a glimpse of Will’s personal and professional problems colliding when his strong beliefs clouded his judgement about the car wreck victim who happened to be a Jehovah’s Witness.

Will mistakenly told the victim’s parents that their son had renounced his faith, but that turned out to be far from the truth. The young man was trying to reconnect with his faith, and Will’s judgment based on the information he had ended up doing more harm than good,

While Marcel initially rebuked Will’s actions, he also understood the ways in which the job could take its toll. He offered Halstead a drink and listened as Will compared his judgment regarding their patient to the ones he made about Natalie’s relationship. That was when Marcel dropped the bombshell that Phillip wasn’t really engaged to Natalie.

Though that reveal didn’t fix Manstead like some had hoped (in fact Natalie blew up at Will not long thereafter), it was refreshing to glimpse a more compassionate side of Marcel in the episode. He was usually very much wrapped up in himself or his work—and for him to reach out and be there for one of his co-workers in that simple yet very impactful way, was wonderful to see. We can only hope for more moments like that as the One Chicago season continues.
