As we wait for Chicago Med to return, we’re recognizing the most valuable actor from Chicago Med season 5 so far: Brian Tee, aka Dr. Ethan Choi.

While we continue to count down to Chicago Med‘s return, we’re taking a moment to recognize the actor who’s given the most to Chicago Med season 5 so far: Brian Tee.

One Chicago fans have watched Tee’s already sizeable role on the series expand over the last two seasons, as the relationship between Dr. Ethan Choi and April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) has become more prominent, leading to more stories for both characters.

Given that, you can’t say Brian Tee hasn’t contributed more than enough to the show this season. And what makes him a standout is not just how much we’ve seen him, but what he’s done with all that screen time.

He’s not only been great when Choi is the hero, but he’s been great when he’s not, too.

Chicago Med season 5 has put the character in a few situations where, let’s face it, he hasn’t had the best outcome—and Tee hasn’t had the best material to work with either.

The episode involving Choi’s patient who was using social media to dictate his treatment was unique but also borderline annoying, and Tee’s performance was the reason to watch that story. He gave it credibility and grounded it when it could have come off as fully ridiculous.

There’s also been Choi’s relationship with April, which increasingly turned into Choi and April having tension so as to justify her new attraction to Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains). Choi’s biggest fault in the first nine episodes was being overly eager to start a family, and Tee has rolled with it even when the writers have made things rougher for his character than they ought to be.

On the happier side—for viewers, anyway—there was Choi teaming up with an overeager medical student who ended up quitting in the same episode. In that final scene between the two, we saw the best of Ethan Choi and Brian Tee simultaneously. Choi is a real teacher and someone who is a natural born leader.

Tee has always been able to communicate that in his performances; he carries himself with so much poise and confidence, but also a gentleness that makes the other characters (and fans) want to follow him.

Things aren’t going to get any easier for Choi when Chicago Med returns, but even as his storylines go up and down, we know that Brian Tee is going to be consistently great.
