Briarpatch is getting a new time slot from USA Network after just two episodes, so what does that mean for Chicago PD alum Brian Geraghty’s series?

Just before Brian Geraghty’s return to Chicago PD, his current series Briarpatch is undergoing a major change—and it’s hard to say if it’s good news or bad news for the USA drama.

Geraghty portrays Captain Gene Colder in Briarpatch, which premiered Thursday, Feb. 6. The quirky murder mystery has now been pulled out of its time slot, and its scheduled airing last night was nixed.

Instead, the show is headed to Mondays at 11:00 p.m. and will return this coming Monday, Feb. 24. You can also watch the episode that was supposed to air this week on demand right now if you don’t want to wait until Monday.

Showrunner Andy Greenwald was the one to announce the move; he tweeted it Wednesday while explaining it was actually good news for the freshman show.

“This has more to do with the popularity of wrestling than it does anything else,” Greenwald said, referring to USA carrying the wrestling series WWE NXT, which is going to be Briarpatch‘s new lead-in.

The hope, presumably, is that the many wrestling fans who tune in for WWE will stick around afterward to lift the ratings of the Rosario Dawson-led series.

Though the Briarpatch premiere was solid for a cable drama with almost 530,000 viewers, the second episode last Thursday took a noticeable tumble down to less than 360,000. That’s a loss of roughly 170,000 people who didn’t come back to Briarpatch—more than a quarter of the show’s audience.

If even a small fraction of the two million-plus people who watch wrestling sample Briarpatch, they can get that audience back and then some. But at the same time, it’s got to be a little nerve-wracking that the show is on the move after two weeks.

Whether you consider Wednesday’s announcement to be good or bad, it has to be frustrating for One Chicago fans who are also fans of Brian Geraghty. The actor, who portrayed Sean Roman on Chicago PD and is about to reprise the role for next week’s One Chicago crossover, hasn’t gotten the breaks he deserves recently.

He was a series regular on TNT’s critically acclaimed The Alienist, but in more of a supporting role playing future President Theodore Roosevelt, and thus got overlooked when people buzzed about the show. And even though it got a sequel, TNT has stayed mum on whether or not he’ll be back for that.

Now he’s got a new series with a more prominent part, but we’re still waiting for that big moment where it catches on. Hopefully this news is in fact good for Briarpatch, especially since the newest episode will air just two days before Geraghty comes back to Chicago PD.
