Chicago Fire had a Chicago PD crossover to stop drug overdoses in Off The Grid. Find out what happened in our Chicago Fire season 8, episode 15 recap.

This week’s Chicago Fire didn’t actually have a lot of fire in it, because it was part one of the next crossover with Chicago PD. But metaphorical temperatures were rising!

Wednesday’s episode “Off the Grid” saw Ambulance 61 struggling with multiple cases of people overdosing on opioids, and their work got much more complicated when former Chicago PD hero Sean Roman (special guest star Brian Geraghty) walked back into the firehouse.

Meanwhile, Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) finally made a decision regarding her birth mother, so she and Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) missed a large part of the crossover. But at least Brett finally made up her mind!

The long night

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: it’s a dark and stormy night at the start of this Chicago Fire episode, when Ambulance 61 returns to Firehouse 51 after a very long day. Casey just happens to be there and asks Brett if she’s called her birth mother. When Brett says she’d rather talk to her mom in person, Casey points out that Brett also has her address and it’s not that far away.

But they barely finish their conversation before there’s yet another call, and it’s not Mercury in retrograde as Emily Foster (Annie Ilonzeh) would like to believe. It’s clearly a drug overdose, and that’s also what’s happened to the girl in the next room, and the third victim in the bathroom. This sets up the premise of the latest One Chicago crossover: opioid overdoses throughout Chicago.

Everyone else quickly arrives on the scene to assist, as the third person collapsed behind the bathroom door, so they have to get her out in order to help her. It’s Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) to the rescue, and we’re down one bathroom door. After the third victim is saved, an upset boyfriend arrives and admits that there were some pills going around at a party. But when Foster tries to question him further, he takes off running.

Severide gives chase for about 20 seconds, but stops on the landing, because this would be a short-lived episode if he caught the guy. Cue Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) from Chicago PD, who take down a description. Back at the firehouse, Severide gets more bad news: the second victim, the runaway’s girlfriend, died on the way to Chicago Med.

“Makes me want to home-school my kids,” Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) comments. “And ground them for life. Only way to keep them safe these days.” He’s just crazy enough to do it too.
