Chicago Fire alum Charlie Barnett returns to NBC in Ordinary Joe pilot
Charlie Barnett has hooked a series regular role in Ordinary Joe, the NBC drama pilot starring James Wolk. Will Barnett soon be back on NBC’s airwaves?
Fans of Chicago Fire might soon get to have Charlie Barnett back on NBC, if his new pilot Ordinary Joe is picked up by the network for next season.
Barnett, who starred on Chicago Fire as firefighter Peter Mills until he was written out of the show in season 3, has booked a co-starring role in the series created by Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner (House).
Ordinary Joe stars James Wolk (Mad Men, The Crazy Ones, Political Animals) as Joe Kimbrough and depicts three parallel versions of Joe’s life based on one pivotal choice he makes. In essence, this is a TV version of the 1998 Gwyneth Paltrow movie Sliding Doors.

Charlie Barnett is playing Eric Payne, who’s one of Joe’s closest friends, per a casting report from Deadline. No further description of his character was given.
But this is likely to excite longtime Chicago Fire viewers, who remember Barnett as Peter Mills and have wondered if the character would ever come back. While this isn’t that, if Ordinary Joe gets a series order, fans would at least be able to see Charlie on an NBC series again.

Charlie Barnett’s star has risen exponentially since he left Chicago Fire. He was most recently seen as the primary antagonist in the final season of Arrow, and has also had major roles in You season 2 and the critically acclaimed Russian Doll, which was renewed by a second season last year by Netflix.
In Ordinary Joe, he joins James Wolk and Natalie Martinez, so there’s a good cast for this pilot. Wolk is an incredibly underrated actor who deserves to be the star of another series since his CBS show Zoo ended after three seasons. Martinez has had starring roles in Under The Dome, APB, and the first season of Secrets & Lies.
We’ll have to see over the next few months if that cast will translate into a series that NBC wants to order. But if so, that’s great news for Barnett, and potentially also for the One Chicago universe, as maybe being on an NBC show would make any possible Peter Mills cameo easier in the future!
