Chicago Justice and Law & Order actor Richard Brooks has been named a series regular in the NBC science fiction pilot Echo; learn about his new role.

Richard Brooks is going from lawyer to cop in his newest project—the NBC sci-fi procedural Echo, which has added the Chicago Justice guest star to its main cast.

Brooks will play police officer Carl Gaines in the half crime drama, half-science fiction pilot, which follows a team of law enforcement officers who fight crime by using time travel and transferring into the bodies of the intended victims.

He joins the previously cast Reid Scott (Veep, My Boys) and Janina Gavankar (Sleepy Hollow and the new Ben Affleck film The Way Back).

Brooks portrayed Assistant District Attorney Paul Robinette for three seasons on Law & Order, then reprised the character as a public defender, both on that series and in an episode of Chicago Justice.

Though One Chicago fans know him best as a lawyer, the actor has played other cops before, such as in guest spots on Elementary and Person of Interest.

He’s also well-known for his guest spot as bounty hunter Jubal Early on Firefly, and more recently has been seen on the Tyler Perry soap The Haves and the Have Nots.

Brooks has long been one of the most underrated actors in the Dick Wolf world. He was the first person to play the second-chair ADA role on Law & Order, working alongside Executive Assistant District Attorney Ben Stone (Michael Moriarty), until being let go after three seasons so women could be added to what had been an all-male cast.

In each of his subsequent guest appearances, Robinette proved a formidable foe for whoever the prosecutor was, including Ben’s son Peter (Philip Winchester) on Chicago Justice.

With that in mind, it’s excellent to see Richard Brooks in another NBC series, although it couldn’t be more different. He’s had some great roles, both guest and regular, since that first go-around as Robinette and he’ll no doubt bring the same talent to Echo.

Will NBC want another crime drama that mixes in a supernatural element, though? They’ve already had The InBetween (canceled after one season) and before that, Awake (ditto). We’ll have to wait and see. But if the show goes forward, Brooks will definitely be a standout part of it.
