This episode is serving as the season finale, but it’s important to note that it is not written as the season finale; it’s just the last episode we’ll get to see because of the production shutdown that happened in March. So it’s the end, but not necessarily an ending.

Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) is at the center of the episode. Choi accidentally stumbles into what appears to be a robbery attempt, and puts himself in harm’s way to help a child who’s been hurt in the robbery.

That certainly will upset Choi’s now ex-fiancee, April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta). He broke things off with her and told her to move out at the end of last week’s episode, but life-threatening circumstances have a way of putting things into perspective.

So there are two questions: will Choi survive, and if he does, will he and April potentially start to work their problems out?

Elsewhere in “A Needle in the Heart,” One Chicago fans will finally get the backstory for Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains) that we’ve been waiting for. It’s only taken us 20 episodes to get there!

What will audiences learn about Crockett? Will the other characters also learn this information and maybe change their opinions about him? He’s become a character who elicits pretty strong opinions, so this episode could explain why or it could also give people (and viewers) a new perspective.

Here’s the official description that NBC has released for this week’s episode. It lays out the three major storylines in this episode, but fans will notice certain characters aren’t mentioned (and that Dr. Charles’ daughter Anna is, confirming that she’s returning).

"Dr. Crockett is visited by two New Orleans detectives who have questions about his past. Dr. Choi puts his life in danger to save a child. Dr. Charles gives fatherly advice to his young daughter."
