Chicago Med season 5 finale preview: Producers tease season ender
Before the Chicago Med season finale, here’s what showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider have to say about the end of Chicago Med season 5.
Tonight Chicago Med season 5 comes to a close, and we have so many questions. What happens next now that Choi has punched Crockett? What about Will’s relationship with Hannah Asher? And what should we expect from the season finale that wasn’t written as a season finale?
To get the answers to those questions, we once again turned to showrunners and executive producers Andrew Schneider and Diane Frolov, who kindly dropped a couple of teases regarding the latest—and last—episode.
Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) spends the episode outside of the hospital, which is probably a good thing for everyone. It’s not often that Chicago Med does whole storylines elsewhere in the city, but it does happen, and there’s a lot which goes into that.

“Generally we stay pretty much within the hospital, but we do like to break the mold occasionally,” Andrew and Diane explained. “There are always logistical questions when we do, and creatively, a medical issue still has to be central to the story.”

Back inside the Emergency Department, Choi’s nemesis Crockett (Dominic Rains) has his hands full when two New Orleans detectives come looking for him. Chicago Med fans will see more of Crockett’s dynamic with Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto), and Diane and Andrew reiterated that a Crockett and Natalie romance is a viable possibility in the future.
“We don’t think it would be wrong to consider a romantic relationship between them,” they told us. “Not at all.”
Speaking of relationships, Natalie’s former fiance Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) has an awful lot on his hands in the Chicago Med season 5 finale, both on his own and while working again with his new girlfriend Hannah (guest star Jessy Schram).
From spurning Natalie’s attempt to reconcile, to his work at the safe injection site, Will has been through the wringer both professionally and personally. So where is his head at while the season draws to a close?
“He feels good about having trusted Hannah,” Diane and Andrew said, “and he’s committed to their relationship.”
Viewers will also want to keep an eye out for some familiar faces in this last episode, including ED chief Dr. James Lanik (Nate Santana) and Dr. Isidore Latham (Ato Essandoh). We asked Andrew and Diane to talk about bringing those two characters in for the finale, and writing for Chicago Med‘s deep bench of supporting players.
“We’ve been blessed with a great supporting cast,” they reflected. “Aside from those you mentioned, we always like bringing back Sam Abrams, our cantankerous neurosurgeon.”
