Chicago Med season 5 character review: Daniel Charles
Our Chicago Med season 6 prognosis for Daniel Charles
Going into the sixth season, Chicago Med should consider all of Charles’ relationships with the rest of the cast, and find one or two to focus on. Give him a character that he can work regularly with and create ongoing storylines with instead of pinballing around. Having someone he leans on isn’t going to stop him from helping other doctors when necessary; it would just give him, and the fans, something to invest into.
The best scenes that Oliver Platt gets are often the ones with S. Epatha Merkerson as Sharon Goodwin. Both are incredible performers, but we usually only see them together for brief periods of time, usually at the end of episodes. What about an episode where they work together on a case? It would be easy to do; Charles could have a patient who requires a specific expertise that Goodwin has from her nursing career.
Or has Daniel ever addressed how people he loves have kept leaving him recently? Reese quit, Robin (Mekia Cox) moved away again, and Caroline died. That’s a pattern that he should notice as a psychiatrist, and it should weigh on him. But aside from Mekia Cox returning for one guest spot, Robin’s not been mentioned recently and neither has Reese. The latter has been totally forgotten since she left.
And for the love of everything, regardless of what Caroline said last season, the writers should not put Charles into a new romance in season 6. The way it brushed off his grief (in the person of his other ex-wife telling him to get over it) was bad enough; it would feel even worse as viewers if he gets rushed into something else.
