Away, Ato Essandoh’s Netflix series, has a premiere date and teaser.
The Netflix original series will drop its 10-episode first season on Friday, Sept. 4 exclusively on the streaming service.
Away is a drama about an international crew of astronauts on a mission to Mars, told through the prism of their commander Emma Logan (played by award-winning actress Hilary Swank).
While Emma leads her team on this dangerous mission, Away also chronicles what her husband and teenage daughter go through when she leaves them behind to make human history.

Ato Essandoh, who recurred on Chicago Med as Dr. Isidore Latham, is a series regular as another of the astronauts on Emma’s team. His character Kwesi is a British-Ghanian botanist, and this is his first space mission; will his inexperience get the better of him?
For One Chicago viewers, it will certainly be interesting to see Essandoh play a less prepared character after seasons of watching Dr. Latham confidently lead the hospital’s cardiothoracic surgery department, albeit in smaller doses over the years.

The impressive Away cast also includes two-time Emmy Award nominee Josh Charles (The Good Wife) as Emma’s husband Mark, who also happens to be a NASA engineer, Mark Ivanir (Homeland), Ray Panthaki (Marcella), Vivian Wu (The Joy Luck Club) and Talitha Bateman (Law & Order: SVU).
Created by Andrew Hinderaker (Pure Genius), the program’s showrunner and lead writer is Jessica Goldberg (who created and ran Hulu’s excellent Aaron Paul drama The Path for three seasons).
All of this is to say that this is a series fans need to take a look at when it arrives in February. It’s very well-cast, and Goldberg is an excellent writer who created some very complicated heroes in her past show. The only question is if the space angle will hold onto fans, with other space shows already on the air, but if it’s got a good story then this should be a hit.
