Chicago Fire season 9 character preview: Kelly Severide
What will happen
Because everything went so well for Severide last season, expect that Chicago Fire will find some way to mess up his domestic bliss when the show returns. Maybe he and Stella will have another fight that threatens to drive them apart, or something else connected to his late father will pop up again, but he’s not going to have a normal personal life. The show never seems to want him to be content with who he is and what he has.
Professionally one of the through-lines in recent seasons has been Severide butting heads with Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) now that Casey outranks him. That will probably happen again at least once this season—where Casey orders Severide to do something that he doesn’t want to, he does it because he has to, and then he sulks about it. Eventually those two will have to learn some way of dealing with the rank discrepancy, but again this seems to be something that works for the show from a dramatic standpoint.
One thing that probably won’t happen is seeing more of his mother. There’s no story point, as of now, that would call for Jennifer to make another re-appearance and Kim Delaney’s availability has just shrunk now that she’s been cast on a major soap opera.
