Chicago Med season 6 character preview: April Sexton
What should happen
April has become fairly stagnant as a character over the last few seasons. Almost all of her growth as a character centers around her relationship with Choi or something that’s connected to it—his sister and her issues, trying to have a baby, now a love triangle that felt like it wasn’t developed in an organic way. Who is April Sexton individually?
Professionally, the show missed a major opportunity in Chicago Med season 5 by not showing more of April stepping up as Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) fought cancer. We saw a little of that (that’s how April ended up working in the hybrid OR with Crockett), but Maggie’s cancer ended up becoming a springboard to her dating now-husband Ben, and April’s story got taken over by the love triangle.
April hasn’t moved much in her career over the last few seasons of the show. She’s supposed to be this top nurse, but we haven’t seen her get recognized for it, or branch off in a new direction, and she can’t really get promoted. At least with the doctors they can try new things or test out a new specialty. April seems very much stuck.
With her and Choi not together at the moment this would be a wonderful time to un-stick her.and come up with something different than her bouncing between cases in the ED. There’s always going to be a certain amount of that because Chicago Med is so focused on emergency cases, but surely there could be a subplot about April getting a temp gig elsewhere or being sent off to some kind of training? Chicago Fire has done those stories and made it work.
