Where we left off
There wasn’t a major Boden-centric storyline during Chicago Fire‘s last season. Instead, he was doing a lot of supporting and encouraging the Firehouse 51 team.
It was Boden who sent Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) to a firefighting conference and got her a job at the fire academy. Boden worked with the team to uncover Jerry Gorsch’s (recurring guest star Steven Boyer) latest scheme.
And in general, Boden kept things at the firehouse from getting too crazy, breaking up the usual fights between other characters and dealing with their various weird ideas. Without him, the inmates would be running the asylum, so to speak.

What should happen
There should always be a Boden-centric storyline in each Chicago Fire season. The show can’t have him turn into a character like Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) on Chicago Med, who’s an authority figure but tends to disappear into the background in any other situation. The question is, what kind of storyline can the writers do?
We’ve already covered “Boden has a conflict with someone in authority/in politics/otherwise with some kind of control over the firehouse” a lot. It’s basically in his job description to deal with any kind of drama that comes from outside Firehouse 51. And he doesn’t really have any room to go places in his career, because that would either be getting demoted or leaving the firehouse.
So what are the options? Maybe Boden gets involved in some kind of outside the firehouse activity like Stella; he’s certainly the kind of person who’d be great in the community. Or the show could explore his friendships with some of the characters. A Boden and Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) story could be fun.
What will happen
Most of Boden’s story in Chicago Fire season 9 will continue to be about him running the firehouse and dealing with the administrative or political fallout from everyone else’s actions. That’s what he normally does and it’s become most of what the show has him do.
He’ll get the usual amount of scenes with Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) talking about the future of 51 or the latest issue that’s cropped up. Such as, he might talk to Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) about accepting her new partner, the same way he did when Emily Foster (Annie Ilonzeh) was first assigned to the firehouse.
Boden will get out into the field on a semi-regular basis, too. While many of his scenes are in his office or at the firehouse, he’s not completely settled into a desk job yet.
