What’s going to happen in Chicago Med season 6?

With the new Chicago Med season coming next week, it’s once again time for us to make some predictions regarding what One Chicago fans are about to see.

Chicago Med season 6 arrives roughly half a year after season 5, and while the show doesn’t have a cliffhanger to resolve this time around, it’s already got a lot on its plate. Dick Wolf has confirmed that the series will incorporate the COVID-19 pandemic and that’s before getting back to all of its various social entanglements. So what’s happening next?

Check out our predictions below and then leave your own ideas in the comments. Then don’t miss the Chicago Med season 6 premiere on Nov. 11 at 8 p.m. on NBC.

More from Chicago Med

1) There will be a major ship development within the first three episodes

Chicago Med is as much about the romantic relationships between the staff as it is about the patients they treat, so expect that early in the season—it could be in the premiere or an episode or two later—something big will happen for one of the show’s three couples.

It’ll either be Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) and Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains) having a romantic moment, or April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) and Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) reconciling, or Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) and Dr. Hannah Asher (recurring guest star Jessy Schram) splitting up. But at least one of those things is going to happen right out of the gate, because this show won’t be without a romantic subplot for long.

2) The COVID storyline won’t be as big as you think

Fans have been divided on the news that Chicago Med is going to address COVID-19 this season. Some people want the medical drama to deal with the world’s biggest medical issue and others would like to keep that out of their entertainment. If you’re not sure about the idea, you might feel better with the educated guess that it isn’t going to take over the whole season.

Wolf’s comments revealed that one of the show’s characters will have contracted coronavirus, but it’s probably not going to be a game-changer. If it’s a main character the writers will need them to be able to work (remember when Dr. Charles was shot and there was a time skip to where he was doing fine? Or how Maggie’s cancer storyline didn’t keep her from working in a lot of season 5?)

Or it could be a recurring/supporting player (like when the series teased that someone would die in season 2 and it ended up being a relatively minor character).

Either way, the portion of the COVID-19 storyline that directly affects the Chicago Med characters isn’t going to go on all season. We’ll likely see scenes that are related to COVID-19, or cases of the week that are connected, but the core characters aren’t going to be turned upside down by this.

3) Will is going to get himself into more trouble, somehow

Will Halstead has always been Chicago Med‘s trouble magnet. He faced a lawsuit early on in the show’s run, has worked undercover for the FBI, ended up in witness protection because of it, and last season put his career on the line by working at an unsanctioned safe injection site.

So with the news that the show has cast a new doctor in an ongoing storyline for Will, we can’t help but think this is going to be another opportunity for him to do something risky. There could be a wrench in this clinical trial that leads Will to break more rules. Or maybe he gets involved with this new doctor personally; he seems to have an issue with not getting close to colleagues (see: Natalie, Nina Shore, and now Hannah).

But this isn’t just going to be Will Halstead working on a big new project for the hospital. This is going to be the latest challenge that he has to overcome.
