Noah Sexton makes his return to Chicago Med this week, but will his latest appearance be more of the same?

The promo for Wednesday’s episode “When Your Heart Rules Your Head” shows that Noah (guest star Roland Buck III) is in serious trouble. Here’s the thing: Noah has almost always been in trouble whenever he appears.

Most of his appearances have included him wanting his sister April (Yaya DaCosta) to help him with something, or April helping him out of something. In that sense, Noah hasn’t developed a lot as a character.

Surely by now, he’ll have had to grow up and become a better doctor? Or is this episode going to have him still spinning his wheels?

Another plot in “When Your Heart Rules Your Head” involves Anna Charles. Per the official synopsis from NBC, the daughter of Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) gets some “life-changing” news this week. But how much does that matter?

The last time viewers heard anything about Anna, it was that she was going to be moving away with her mother. If the plan is still for her to leave, anything that happens to her won’t rreally affect the show given that she’s going to be several states away (and thus potentially not heard from or mentioned again, as we’ve seen happen with other One Chicago characters who have left the general vicinity).

Beyond that, Anna’s storyline has never been particularly compelling. It’s fine to see Daniel trying to parent, but it’s just not that interesting; instead, it comes across as giving him something to do outside of the hospital, especially since the show killed off Caroline (guest star Paula Newsome) last season shortly after she and Daniel were remarried.

Personal storylines are what’s really driven Chicago Med the last two-plus seasons and this one is still missing something.

Elsewhere, the clinical trial storyline is still going on, which also involves April since she volunteered to help out last week. Will Noah’s situation pull April away from that, or will the clinical trial—which she felt was important—keep her from rushing to Noah’s rescue? We’ll have to watch and see how April responds when both things demand her attention.

This could be an episode that puts a new spin on some old stories, or it could be more of the same. If nothing else, fans will get an update on what Noah’s been up to.
