This week’s Chicago PD sees Kim Burgess contemplating motherhood—again. But is this the big Burzek moment many fans have been waiting for, or another episode of heartbreak?

“In Your Care” already has viewers excited because the promo gave away that Burgess (Marina Squerciati) might be taking custody of the girl she bonded with two episodes ago.

Shippers would love to see her and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) have their own family unit, even though they’re not officially back together as a couple.

But don’t get your hopes up too high just yet, because the precedent shows that Chicago PD could take this either way.

Fans had the same dream when Burgess was revealed to be pregnant last season, only for Chicago PD to have her suffer a miscarriage a few episodes later.

It’s entirely possible the show could tease us with this adoption, only to have it fall through by the end of the episode—or even later this season. (Remember the Louie storyline on Chicago Fire, where his birth father reappeared unexpectedly?)

Plus, as Ruzek said in the promo for this episode, adopting a child will not fill the void of the one that they lost. It might sound great to Burgess, and even like the right thing to do, but is it what’s actually in everyone’s best interest?

That also includes the viewers. One Chicago has a terrible history overall of either using family members mostly for drama, or forgetting they exist. We’ve not heard much about Burgess’ niece or her sister since Nicole was attacked in “Last Minute Resistance,” and Jordan Atwater got sent away and forgotten about for a long time until last season.

(Aside: this would be a great episode to work in a Burgess and Atwater scene. Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) has been acting as a surrogate parent for years. If anybody could give Burgess proper advice on this situation, it would be her ex-partner and supposedly good friend. There’s no reason not to have a scene between them tonight.)

If Burgess and Ruzek are going to adopt, then the show can’t have them do it and forget about it after this episode. They, and the viewers, deserve a fully fleshed out storyline.

But when the writers teased people this long with the idea of even revisiting the idea of them as a couple, anything is possible.
