Is this week the Chicago Fire episode where Matthew Casey finally has enough?

“Double Red” seems focused on Casey’s (Jesse Spencer) physical—and possibly mental—health. The synopsis for the episode reveals that he takes a severe blow to the head, while the promo has its focus on his mind. However you slice it, tonight is not a good night for Casey.

The thing is that he’s always been a bit of a punching bag on this show. After nine seasons, every character on Fire has had some life-threatening experiences, but Casey and Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) have gotten the most of them.

It was even referenced a few seasons ago, when Casey was nearly shot and then-chaplain Kyle Sheffield (Teddy Sears) tried to talk to him afterward.

What’s going to make Casey’s latest major injury more serious than any other? And is there a point where he’s just going to have enough and want to take a vacation?

The latter is obviously unlikely, since that would mean Jesse Spencer would be gone for an episode or two (although maybe One Chicago fans wouldn’t mind that for a week if it meant we knew Casey was finally catching a break).

But since Casey was getting annoyed with all of the life-threatening stuff a few seasons ago, logic would suggest he’s still going to be upset with it now. Especially if this is something that has any kind of impact on his cognitive faculties.

Naturally, this opens the door for some moments between him and on-again, off-again love interest Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer). Although Brett has now hooked up with Greg Grainger (guest star Jon-Michael Ecker), don’t think that Fire won’t tease viewers with Brett worrying over and/or comforting Casey.

The other storyline in “Double Red” involves four Firehouse 51 characters going off for some sort of training—the show’s three newest additions and then Mouch (Christian Stolte).

Usually, when there’s some sort of course involved, the plotline isn’t that interesting. We had Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) going off to a workshop where she quite obviously showed up all the officers that outranked her, and we’ve had training used as a disciplinary action, but none of that has been super-compelling.

What’s it going to be this time? With the likes of Mouch and Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende) in the mix, it would sound like some sort of comic relief. But season 9 has already given us plenty of the “Gallo says or does something embarrassing” moments. So we’ll have to wait and see which way this storyline goes, but hopefully it will balance out Casey’s plight while also holding the audience’s attention.
