The latest Chicago Med may be vague on plot details, but there are a lot of interesting little tidbits about tonight’s episode that will keep One Chicago fans entertained.

“Letting Go Only to Come Together” marks the return of director SJ Main Munoz, whom One Chicago fans met last season when she directed the episode “In the Name of Love.” It’s great to have her back in the fold, and she spoke about working on this week’s installment.

“This week, viewers will see Dr. Charles bonding with a patient very similar to himself,” she explained. “It’s a touching storyline to watch, just as it was fun to film working with the talented Oliver Platt alongside notable guest star James Eckhouse.”

Eckhouse is one of those actors who’s been all over TV, with his many credits also including episodes of Code Black, NCIS and Station 19. Having him teamed up with another well-traveled actor like Oliver Platt should make for a wonderful story.

But wait, there’s more: we’re also getting a Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) story this week, and it features the return of an amazing recurring player. Tony winner Heather Headley, who recurred in season 4 and hadn’t been around since one episode in season 5, is back as hospital executive Gwen Garrett!

(You can see what Heather’s been up to recently here.)

“The award-winning actress S. Epatha Merkerson, the face of Chicago Med‘s Sharon Goodwin, is a true role model for women in the TV and film industry,” SJ added. “It was a joy working with her for this week’s episode as her character struggles to reconcile her personal and professional life while having her son, Michael, working at Med.”

What does Gwen have to do with that, and where has she been since season 5? Presumably she got her contract renewed and has continued to work at the hospital? If that’s the case, is she going to talk to Goodwin about the obvious conflict of interest—and why has it taken this long? (Although the latter might be a scheduling issue; Headley’s a pretty busy actress, currently one of the stars of Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias.)

Whatever the storyline, it’s good to have her back as well as have SJ Main Munoz back behind the camera. This episode may not have a ton of huge plot twists but it’s got a lot of talent packed in.
