Sharon Goodwin is at the heart of the next Chicago Med, but it doesn’t look like it’s for any good reason.

The promo for this episode implicates Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) in a car accident that causes injury to someone else. That means she’ll be facing backlash from the hospital board, to say nothing of any criminal or civil problems based on what happens to the victim.

“What A Tangled Web We Weave” is the first Goodwin-centric Chicago Med installment in a little while, and there’s no doubt that Merkerson will give a great performance; she always does.

The question is what does this mean for her character? How does this push Sharon Goodwin forward?

Characters have faced legal trouble before—two of them have been arrested, one’s been accused of murder, and there’s been lawsuits threatened on more than one occasion. So this is not necessarily a new storyline.

But it sounds like nothing but trouble for Goodwin, who hasn’t had a ton of character development this season anyway. Will her job be in danger and the season might end with the hospital having to face the idea of some kind of replacement? That would be one heck of a plot twist to throw in as the season winds down.

Or is this going to be another episode where one of our characters is on the legal hot seat and then it somehow goes away by the end of the hour? After all, both times when someone ended up arrested, it didn’t last past that episode.

The person who really should be worried is Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto), whose theft of medication will continue to be a subplot in “What A Tangled Web We Weave.” That’s going to come out; that’s the whole point of introducing that story. It just isn’t clear when. Will it be this week or will the show extend the suspense out for a few weeks?

And if Goodwin gets into trouble, will that affect her ability to discipline Natalie or anyone else? She can’t exactly mete out punishment if she’s suspended or if her staff no longer respects her as a leader. Let’s see what’s in store for her but it feels like this could be a huge speed bump for the Goodwin character.
