There’s a lot happening in the Chicago Med season finale, so much that we went to showrunners and executive producers Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider to help us keep it all straight!

Here’s what Andrew and Diane had to tell One Chicago Center about several of the many challenges facing the hospital staff in tomorrow’s final episode of season 6; get some clues before the finale airs at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

Fans know from the promo that “I Will Come To Save You” includes Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) being shot by the patient that Dr. Dean Archer (recurring guest star Steven Weber) drugged in a prior episode.

“Everyone in the ED is concerned about Ethan,” explained Andrew. “His injuries are serious, and Med’s doctors argue over the best course of treatment. If the wrong decision is made, Ethan could wind up paralyzed or even die.”

But just because Choi spends more time as a patient than a doctor, that doesn’t mean you won’t see a lot of him in this episode.

“In Ethan’s case, he is very active before he’s shot,” added Diane, “and even though he’s sidelined through much of the episode, the emotional impact of the shooting on the other characters is profound.”

After Choi’s shooting, and the fact that Ramona escaped the Emergency Department not so long ago, is it time for the Chicago Med staff to have another talk about hospital security? The producers told us it might be happening, but not right now.

“We have dealt with hospital security in the past, notably when Charles was shot a few seasons back,” said Andrew. “However, it is not a center-stage issue in the finale. We do want to deal with it in the future.”

Another character definitely taking center stage in the Chicago Med finale is Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss). After thinking about quitting his job earlier this season, Will now finds himself facing an involuntary career change when he faces the blowback of his former fiancee’s actions. Is Will at a crossroads personally and professionally?

“Crossroads is the perfect way to put it,” Diane told us. “When the theft of the trial drugs becomes known to Goodwin, Will has to decide whether to continue to protect Natalie or to tell Goodwin the truth. Either will have major consequences for Will.”

Don’t forget about the other characters, either. The end of Chicago Med season 6 will also have steps forward for Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) and Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains) in between all of the aforementioned drama.

“Maggie’s relationship with her daughter Vanessa will take an unexpected turn in the finale,” Andrew teased. “And, without giving away the story, Crockett’s relationship with Natalie will also figure prominently in the finale.”

One thing that might not be coming back next season? The show’s creative choice to have episode titles with the same number of words as the season it’s on.

“We haven’t decided yet,” said Diane. “Coming up with six-word titles was challenging!”
