Chicago Fire spoilers: How did Chicago Fire season 9 end?
By Cody Schultz
Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas warned us a “life-altering” finale was coming and the Chicago Fire season 9 finale definitely lived up to that promise.
In the closing hour of the season, “No Survivors,” we saw one member of 51 pondering a career change, witnessed a jaw-dropping Brettsey development, celebrated another couple’s big news, watched as sparks were reignited between a pair of old flames and found the lives of several beloved members of 51 hanging in the balance in a finale sequence that is sure to have fans talking all summer long!
** Warning: The following post contains spoilers from the Chicago Fire season 9 finale **
Before we get to the season’s big cliffhangers, let’s start with the more pleasant developments the season 9 finale delivered beginning with the elephant in the room: the fate of Brettsey.
After confessing his love for her in the previous episode, things between Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Brett (Kara Killmer) were quite awkward throughout the better part of the episode. Luckily Brett’s avoidance of Casey was a misdirect of sorts as she would eventually confess that she felt the same way about him leading to a steamy hookup for the couple.
Speaking of couples, love was in the air in 51 as the flirtation between Violet (Hanako Greensmith) and Gallo (Alberto Rosende) seemed to move back to the front burner. While Violet is playing hard to get, it’s clear the spark has been reignited between the pair and we fully expect the relationship to develop even further in season 10!
Finally, our last big development on the relationship front came as Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) announced their engagement to 51, and Severide asking Casey to be his best man.
Chicago Fire season 9 finale ending explained
Chicago Fire season 9 ended with two big cliffhangers with the future of Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) and the entire Squad team up in the air.
Starting with Boden, in the finale we learned that he had been approached about being considered for the deputy district chief role. The opportunity weighs on Boden throughout the episode as he has a series of encounters both with members of 51 and those in his community championing the impact he’s had as Chief.

In the final moments before the season’s big cliffhanger, we see Boden call up Deputy Commissioner Gloria Hill to presumably give her his decision on the deputy district chief role; however, we don’t get to hear his answer meaning we’ll have to wait until season 10 to learn whether Boden could be leaving 51.
As for the episode’s big cliffhanger?
Looking to save the life of the victim trapped in an overturned boat, Severide, Cruz (Joe Minoso), Capp (Randy Flagler) and Tony (Anthony Ferraris) suit up in scuba gear and make their way into the waters to perform an underwater rescue.
While they’re able to make it to the victim, their exit was blocked after the boat began collapsing on top of them. In the final moments of the finale, the water rises above their head just as the episode fades to black leaving the fate of the four Squad members very much up in the air as the rest of 51 watched on from the shore unknowing of the danger their fellow firefighters were in.
