Heading into the Chicago Med season 7 finale, fans had been warned by Steven Weber that the writers had planned a surprising finale that would leave fans speechless and talking all summer long.
Well, Weber was not joking! The season 7 finale left fans with a lot of questions to process in what was an eventful finale that did not disappoint. The final minutes of the episode, in particular, featured a series of shocking cliffhangers that we’ll be trying to process all summer as we wait for the One Chicago shows’ return this year.
Among them was a cliffhanger that left the future of two of Med’s finest up in the air following an unexpected turn of events at Will’s apartment building.
** Warning: The following post contains spoilers from the Chicago Med season 7 finale **
Is Will Halstead leaving Chicago Med?
As the season came to a close, it seemed like Will was about to end the season in a good spot and might make it out of the season finale without being a part of its cliffhanger. Following another hard day of work, Will traded in his stethoscope for a toolbox to help fix Hannah’s window back at the apartment.
After fixing the window, the two decided to try starting over suggesting a fresh start for the pair to explore a relationship next season. Hannah invited him to enjoy some Ramen with her and the scene cut away to Dylan and Milena.
However, things took an unexpected turn for the worse when the pair suddenly smelled smoke. Will then arrived at their door telling them they needed to get out of the building which was on fire, before heading down the stairs to safety — or so we thought.
When a man from Milena’s undercover time showed up with a gun, a struggle ensued between him and Dylan leading to Dylan accidentally shooting the man. Not wanting to leave him there to die, Dylan sent Milena away to safety while he tried to come up with a plan to get the injured man out safely.
Re-enter Will, who came back after hearing a gunshot. He then proceeded to try to help Dylan carry the man out of the building before the pair found themselves trapped in the hall with no clear exit as the camera faded to black.
The scene left Will’s future on the series up in the air, but we have a feeling we haven’t seen the last of Will Halstead. The character is one of only a few original characters still on the show and is involved in a number of ongoing storylines which still have a lot of stories to be told.
Writing the character off unexpectedly seems like a move the writers aren’t likely to make.
Is Nick Gehlfuss leaving Chicago Med?
If you’re wondering whether Nick Gehlfuss is leaving Chicago Med after the season 7 finale, you’re not alone as many fans seem to be concerned about Will Halstead’s future on the show. Given when we last saw Will he was trapped in his burning apartment building with Dylan, there’s definitely a reason for concern but all signs seem to point toward Gehlfuss returning for season 8.
It’s possible Gehlfuss could choose to depart the series during the offseason, but there have been no hints of Gehlfuss looking to depart the show. He was among many to sign a new deal with the show last offseason, but the terms of the deal are unknown making it unclear it if was a one-season deal or if NBC locked Gehlfuss down for multiple seasons.
Should anything change, we’ll be sure to drop an update in this post, but we have a good feeling Nick Gehlfuss will be back as Will Halstead for Chicago Med season 8!
