Chicago PD spoilers: How did Chicago PD season 8 end?
By Cody Schultz
The final hour of Chicago PD season 8 was definitely one of the show’s most intense episodes yet, bringing with it several shocking moments and developments that promise to keep fans talking right up until the season 9 premiere this fall!
With Burgess (Marina Squerciati) missing, tensions were at all all-time high among the Intelligence Unit as they found themselves conflicted on the plan of attack in an episode, particularly when it came to following protocol and coloring outside the lines to get results.
** Warning: The following post contains spoilers from the Chicago PD season 8 finale **
As the team followed leads they hoped would lead them to Burgess, Burgess found herself in a fight for her life after being abducted in the final moments of the previous episode. While Burgess attempted to reason with her abductor, her efforts proved fruitless and things only got worse once his partner arrived.
Upon arrival, it was clear his only intention in showing up was to tie up loose ends which he did by shooting both his partner and Burgess. At first, it seemed as though we had just watched Burgess die before our eyes only minutes into the finale; however, it turned out she was only playing dead until her assailant had left.
Using a belt as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding in her stomach area caused by the two rounds she took to her abdomen, Burgess was able to make it outside where she broke into an abandoned car and managed to turn on the emergency lights before passing out in the driver’s seat.
As we cut back to the rest of the Intelligence Unit, the team was still at odds over their approach to finding Burgess with Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) pushing for the team to do things by the books and Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) itching to get out there and use any means necessary to bring Burgess home.
Ultimately, Voight (Jason Beghe) decided to split the difference with Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) joining Halstead to follow up on their lead via a more by-the-book approach and Voight, Ruzek, and Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) hitting the streets to look for their suspect.
Chicago PD season 8 finale ending explained
So just how did the Chicago PD season 8 finale storylines play out as the episode reached its conclusion? Let’s take a look character by character.
It turned out Voight kept the more promising leads for himself which led him to the individual behind the crime ring and for shooting Burgess. With Burgess’s life on the line, Voight reverted to his old ways in attempting to beat Burgess’s whereabouts out of the suspect.
Luckily, Upton showed up and was able to convince him to bring the suspect in rather than taking things too far. Unfortunately, when in the process of uncuffing him, the suspect went for Voight’s gun and refused to listen to Upton’s request to drop the weapon he was quickly turning on Voight. As a result, she had no choice but to shoot the man in order to protect Voight.
After sending a distraught Upton home, our final glimpse of Voight in the finale showed him digging a grave and burning the body of the victim in an effort to erase any possible trace of evidence linking him or Upton to the body. With Voight reverting to his old ways, it’s going to be interesting to see where he goes next in season 9 and how Upton handles the actions he took should she learn the truth of how exactly he ‘handled” the situation.

Speaking of Upton, after finally making her way home after the ordeal with Voight, she dropped a major bombshell on Halstead. Rather than confessing to the events of the night, Upton asked Halstead to marry her. That’s right, Chicago PD season 8 ended with an Upstead proposal!
As expected, we do not find out whether Halstead agrees to the proposal or not with the storyline likely to play out in the first episodes of season 9.
Finally, what came of Burgress?
Before the dramatic final moments, Burgress was rescued by Halstead and Atwater, who discovered her in the car in the nick of time. She was quickly transported to Chicago Med where she was rushed into emergency surgery.
While her fate was not confirmed before the episode’s end, it was revealed that she was stable and was going to survive. As such, we should see her back in action next season working through her recovery and likely bringing some major developments in her relationships, including with Ruzek.
