April Sexton is changing careers on Chicago Med, but could she possibly return to the Emergency Department next season?

SPOILER ALERT: The rest of this article contains spoilers for the season 6 finale of Chicago Med. If you haven’t seen it yet, the finale is now streaming on Peacock.

In Wednesday’s season finale “I Will Come To Save You,” April (Yaya DaCosta) found out that she had been accepted into the Nurse Practicioner program, allowing her to start pursuing the bigger ambitions she’s had for a few seasons now.

That lined up with Yaya DaCosta’s decision to leave the series; the actress chose not to renew her contract and already has the starring role in another show lined up.

But while April was overjoyed at the news, the episode didn’t really feel like a goodbye either, as she confessed that she still had feelings for her ex-fiance Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) while Choi recovered from being attacked by a former patient. And we didn’t see an actual farewell scene past her getting that acceptance letter. So will there be a swan song for April?

Is April returning in Chicago Med season 7?

As of right now, there’s no official word about Yaya DaCosta returning as April in the Chicago Med season 7 premiere. It’s possible her guest appearance could be announced later, similar to Norma Kuhling and Colin Donnell confirming that they’d return for the season 5 premiere after their characters were written out of the show at the end of season 4.

It comes down to if Yaya DaCosta is willing and able to reprise her role whenever the seventh season begins filming. Not only does she already have a next job, but she’s the star of her new series, so she might not be available to come back. Or she may choose to focus on her current project rather than come back to film a complete goodbye for April.

What will happen to April on Chicago Med?

Unlike Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto), whose fate was left on a cliffhanger, April’s story is more easily resolvable off-screen if the Chicago Med writers choose to go that route. The viewers know she got into the other program, and so they can just say she’s off working, especially since she’s not leaving under any kind of controversy.

The good news is that should make it easy if DaCosta ever wants to come back for a guest spot, now or otherwise—her character’s still employed and still pretty close by.

But the big question mark is if Chexton fans are going to get more closure. Considering that April admitted she’s still in love with Choi, it would feel a bit unfinished to just leave their relationship at that. Will they get an actual goodbye moment together? Or since Choi is going to be recovering for a while, will the writers just focus on that instead?

It’d be nice to see April come back for at least one scene to tell Choi she’s moving on and say a real farewell, but we’ll have to see this fall if that’s what actually happens.
