What it means

The ninth season was a different kind of season for Severide fans, in that it avoided a lot of what we’re used to seeing for him. While Stellaride had another problem to overcome, it was one that seemed plausible and not something manufactured just for the sake of giving them more drama, and we didn’t have anyone come in and threaten their relationship. Nor did Kelly go off and do some kind of crazy thing that caught up to him later. In fact, this might be the most mature that Kelly Severide has been in a long time.

That actually poses an interesting question when it comes to Severide’s future. Derek Haas has been open in the past about how much the writers like writing Severide’s flaws, so will they keep him moving forward, especially since he seems to be settling down? Or will they decide that they want to throw something else in Kelly’s way to keep him, and the audience, from getting too comfortable? It’d be nice to avoid any future surprises, but that could also be interpreted as less excitement (even though one could argue his job provides enough of that).

Of course, that depends on whether or not he survives past the first episode of season 10. But this is a character who has a track record of getting involved in life-threatening cliffhangers, so it was hard to get too worried about the season 9 ender. While someone may indeed not make it out alive, it feels like Severide is always escaping potential death.
