What’s next for Matthew Casey in Chicago Fire season 10?
What it means
You can’t say that Casey didn’t accomplish anything in Chicago Fire season 9. He got himself a new girlfriend, after literal seasons of back and forth, and that’s a huge enough step on its own. When you consider that since Dawson’s exit, Casey’s been doing this with Brett for years, including both of them having other relationships that were clearly just short-term speed bumps, having the two of them get together is a big piece for his character. Whether you’re a Brettsey shipper or not, it means the writers can move on to other things.
They certainly gave audiences a scare with the head injury plotline, but since Casey didn’t suffer any major effects, it seems like that’s off the table for the time being. It might come up again at some point in season 10 or beyond—after all, a history of getting hurt doesn’t just go away; he’s still going to have to be cautious about his future. Especially since he does get into more trouble than other characters, he’s not necessarily out of the woods just because he got positive MRI results this time. But that’s the kind of thing that might get tabled for a season or two and then come up in the future (like if Jesse Spencer ever does decide to leave, which there’s been no real indication that he wants to).
What was most interesting was getting a little bit more of Casey’s family back on screen. While the watch story wasn’t earth-shattering, just being reminded that he has a sister and getting a bit more insight into his family was nice. One Chicago normally utilizes family relationships for drama, so it’d be great to see future scenes of Casey just hanging out with his sister, or hearing in a line that maybe he called her last week. Little things like that to keep reminding us that his character is more than Firehouse 51 and more than his love life.
