As the sixth season of Chicago Med came to a close, NBC’s medical drama left viewers with quite a lot to theorize about during the summer hiatus with a finale filled with jaw-dropping cliffhangers.

Will (Nick Gehlfuss) was fired by Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) for his role in breaking the drug trial protocol. Natalie (Torrey DeVitto), upon learning Will had been fired for her actions, confessed the truth in hopes of clearing Will’s name leaving her future in question.

Ethan (Brian Tee) was left to recover from a near-death encounter, leaving Dean (Steven Weber) in charge of the ED as its interim chief. Oh, and let’s not forget that Maggie (Marlyne Barrett) found out her daughter had known the truth about their connection from the moment she first stepped foot in Med and revealed she wanted nothing to do with her as the season came to a close.

Needless to say, the finale was filled with shocking developments which have fans eager to know how exactly the writers will look to approach them as Chicago Med season 7 begins this fall. Given we left off with a lot of intriguing moments, the assumption among fans seems to be that season 7 will pick up right where we left off but could a time jump be coming this fall?

When will Chicago Med season 7 pick up?

Looking ahead to Chicago Med season 7, one would assume the plan would be for the show to pick up right where the action left off or perhaps the morning after. However, it appears a time jump hasn’t yet been ruled out for the upcoming season.

While TVLine has confirmed both Chicago Fire and Chicago PD will begin their new seasons right where the action left off, the plans for Chicago Med are unknown as it’s not entirely clear what the plans are for Med.

Given the One Chicago dramas are all set within the same universe and a crossover is coming this fall, we imagine the writers won’t look to do anything crazy in jumping ahead by a significant amount of time. That said, it is possible the writers could look to incorporate a minor time jump to help address a few major developments on the casting front.

As previously reported, both Yaya DaCosta and Torrey DeVitto have chosen not to return for season 7 and will not appear in the upcoming series (sans a possible guest appearance in the premiere to wrap up loose ends, but no plans have been confirmed). We also know the new season will introduce two new characters in Guy Lockard’s Dr. Dylan Scott and Kristen Hager’s Dr. Stevie Hammer.

Considering Chicago Med season 7 will have to address these departures and new arrivals, it is possible a small time jump could be used to explain Natalie and April’s absence as well as the arrival of Med’s two new doctors.

Of course, we’ll have to wait to see how the writers choose to begin the new season but it seems a time jump is not off the table at this moment and could come into play for season 7.
