As the most recent season of Chicago PD came to a close, there were plenty of questions left unanswered regarding the futures of our favorite men and women in blue. While Chicago PD is no stranger to cliffhangers, season 8 definitely left the writers with plenty of stories in need of resolution in Chicago PD season 9.

What’s next for Burgess (Marina Squerciati) both professionally and personally following her near-death experience? And how will almost losing Burgess affect Ruzek’s (Patrick John Flueger) season 9 arc?

Will Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) take Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) up on her suggestion to get married? Can Voight (Jason Beghe) come back from the lines he crossed in his efforts to find Burgess in time and the consequences said actions caused Upton to make? And what’s next for Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) following what felt like an unresolved arc?

There are a lot of questions to be answered when the season begins and there is no denying fans are hoping to get answers for at least a few of these questions within the opening hour of the season. While we’re anticipating resolution of some kind in the season 9 premiere, a bigger question might be how exactly that resolution may occur and whether a time jump could be used to help move any of the storylines along.

Chicago PD has incorporated a few minor time jumps into the show over the years, but should fans anticipate a time jump of any kind in Chicago PD season 9?

When will Chicago PD season 9 begin?

First, for those wondering when the new season of Chicago PD will literally begin, NBC has confirmed the new season will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 22 with the season 9 premiere airing at 10/9c that evening.

Although we’ve seen minor time jumps used in the past on Chicago PD, it appears there are no plans for a time jump of any kind at the start of season 9. Instead, the plan seems to be for the season 9 premiere to pick up right where the action ended in season 9.

As confirmed by TVLine, the upcoming season 9 premiere is expected to pick up right where the previous season left off. While we’re not anticipating a resolution to some of the questions that are likely to be a slow burn this season such as how Voight’s actions might come back to haunt him, it should allow the writers to address some of the more timely cliffhangers.

If the season picks up right where season 8 ended, it’s possible we’ll get to see Halstead’s immediate reaction to Upton’s proposal. We’re also anticipating a near-immediate update on Burgess’s condition and perhaps a hint or two about what could be next for Burzek fans this season.
