As Chicago Fire season 9 came to a close, there were a lot of questions left on the minds of fans regarding what the future would hold for many of our favorite characters. Although all eyes were on whether Squad would survive — spoiler alert, they all make it out unscathed as expected for those wondering — the biggest overlooked mystery was what was next for 51’s longtime leader.

We’re, of course, referring to Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) whose future was left up in the air with 51 as the season came to an end when he was offered the position of deputy district chief in the CFD.

Although he at first seemed quick to brush off the idea, as the finale proceeded he seemed to come around to the idea in recognizing the impact he could have in the role. When we last saw him in the season 9 finale, he called up First Deputy Commissioner Gloria Hill’s (J. Nicole Brooks) to inform her of his decision and season 10 wasted no time in cluing fans in on Boden’s choice.

Chicago Fire spoilers: Does Boden accept the deputy district chief job?

In the Chicago Fire season 10 premiere, it’s revealed that Boden has decided to accept the deputy district chief job which truly feels like a long time coming for 51’s longtime leader.

While it’s impossible to imagine Boden in any role other than Chief of 51, he’s long overdue for a promotion and after 10 seasons the timing couldn’t have been better to finally see Boden given the chance to further his career.

In accepting the deputy district chief, Boden will have the chance to make an even larger impact within the CFD and the good news is that he won’t be going anywhere as Eamonn Walker is not leaving the show. Rather, Boden is simply moving on to a new position which will allow the writers to explore new storylines via the character and at 51 as the house adjusts to Boden’s new position.

Is Boden leaving 51?

The one caveat of taking this new job within the CFD is that Boden will have to leave Firehouse 51, although he did try to have his cake and eat it too in attempting to find a way to make 51 the headquarter for his base of operation.

Unfortunately, the role requires Boden to put down roots at the CFD headquarters meaning he will indeed be leaving 51. While he’s moving on from 51, he was sure to stress to the 51 family that just because he’s moving into this new role and won’t be at 51 as its chief, the foundation they’ve built can weather any storm and they’ll always be a family.

With Boden departing 51, it’s going to be interesting to see who will be stepping in as 51’s new chief and how the change in leadership might shake up the dynamics of the firehouse. Luckily we have a new season ahead to explore these stories and more and can expect Boden to maintain a presence on the show.
