Chicago Med: SPOILER returns for emotional sendoff
Chicago Med has made some major personnel changes over the years, but the season 7 premiere delivered one of its most emotional sendoffs to date.
It not only rounded out of the most important characters in the show’s history, but it signified crucial changes for the main cast members that remain.
Although the departure of this particular character was established in the season 6 finale, Chicago Med fans weren’t sure if they’d have to stomach an offscreen exit or be treated to a final scene in which the character was allowed to properly say goodbye. Thankfully, fans got the latter in the cold open of the season 7 premiere, titled “You Can’t Always Trust What You See.”
Dr. Natalie Manning Says Goodbye
The season 7 opener bids farewell to Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto). The series mainstay can be seen packing up a moving van and strapping her son into a car seat as she prepares to leave Chicago for good. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) sees her off, and despite the romantic tension the two have had in the past, the pair share a sweet, uncomplicated moment together.

Manning assures Will that she’ll be okay on her own, but she also urges him to get his job back at ED following his season 6 firing. This line of dialogue is the only reference to ongoing plot points, namely Manning’s decision to swipe clinical drugs for her ailing mother, and Will’s attempt to take the blame.
It makes sense that the showrunners would want to emphasis the personal history of the characters here, and the tender performances by both actors help to sell it as a memorable start to the season.
Why Is Torrey DeVitto Leaving Chicago Med?
The pair share a final hug and Will mentions staying in touch, which could hint at the possibility of Manning’s character making a guest appearance at a later date.
While some of Chicago Med‘s cast departures have been chalked up to creative differences, DeVitto’s exit stemmed from a simple desire to pursue other career ventures. The actress spoke highly of her tenure on the show via Instagram, and while she kept things vague, she did make mention of “new adventures” that she’s working on and is eager to share with fans.
