Chicago PD season 9 to introduce love interest for Kevin Atwater

Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) has had a rocky relationship history. The upstanding Chicago PD member has never quite managed to stick the landing when it comes to romance, but a recent interview with showrunner Rich Eid has fans thinking that he might finally catch a break.

In the past, Atwater has had his romantic pursuits cut short. The most notable example of this came in season 6, when the woman he was seeing, Laila (Milauna Jemai Jackson), was sentenced to prison for murder. Atwater had a flirtatious dynamic with rookie officer Vanessa Rojas (Lisseth Chavez), but her sudden from the series departure left him empty-handed once again.

Hawkins has discussed the character’s shortcomings in the boyfriend department, chalking up his lack of success to a lack of experience. “I think Atwater would be guilty of not having certain love skills as highly developed as they should have been”, he told TV Line in March.

Rich Eid has confirmed that Atwater will finally break his cold streak in season 9. The showrunner  told TV Line that the character meets a “dynamic young woman” over the course of the season, and the two quickly develops a fun and unique bond. While the details are left vague as to who the love interest is, Eid assures fans that it provoke lots of interesting new wrinkles for Atwater as a character.

Atwater will be given a respite in the form of this new love interest, but of course, love is never as easy as it initially sounds. “Things will be complicated, as any relationship on this show tends to be” Eid added. “It’ll be a great ride for his character.”

Some fans believed that Atwater and Burgess (Marina Squerciati) were headed for a romance in seasons prior, but the latter’s shooting and seeming reconciliation with Atwater’s best friend, Ruzek (Patrick Flueger), has all but put the kibosh on that story angle.

Atwater’s romantic announcement also comes in direct contrast to the rumors that Voight (Jason Beghe) and Miller (Nicole Ari Parker) are going to get involved in season 9.
