There’s a new doctor in town, and his name is Matt Cooper. Chicago Med said goodbye to a pair of core characters in season 6, and season 7 has brought in newcomers who are bound to stir up the show’s already volatile atmosphere.

Dr. Cooper is one of the most notable additions, as he could very well pose a threat to the good name of the Gaffney Medical Center. In the season 7 premiere, Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) theorizes that he might be selling overpriced cardiac monitors to patients so that he can line his pockets.

Here’s a primer on the mysterious Cooper and the actor who plays him.

Michael Rady plays Dr. Cooper on Chicago Med

Dr. Cooper may look familiar to some viewers, and that’s because he’s played by the charismatic Michael Rady. The actor made his screen debut in the beloved teen comedy The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2004), and reprised his role in the 2008 sequel. He’s continued to land roles in films like Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar (2011), but his most notable work has been on the small screen.

Rady has appeared in some of the most notable shows of the past decade, with guest spots on Melrose Place, Grey’s Anatomy, and Jane the Virgin to name a few. Rady is also the star of numerous Hallmark TV films, with some recent examples being The Christmas Bow (2020) and A New Year’s Resolution (2021). Chicago Med will be Rady’s first recurring role since his 2018 stint on NBC’s Timeless.

Off the screen, Rady has 3 children with his actress wife, Rachael Kemery.

Rady’s character may pose a threat to the current ED, but the character also has a personal connection to Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss). The two doctors have known each other for years, with Cooper even having dated Halstead’s cousin at one point. Goodwin relied on this connection when she asked Halstead to go “undercover” for her, and keep tabs on Cooper’s actions.

Cooper is part of what the showrunners consider a fresh start for Chicago Med. “We would describe season 7 as a new beginning,” Diane Frolov told ET. “And our hope is that the viewers find it just as entertaining, provocative and emotionally engaging as before.”

Cooper looks to be a worthwhile foil for Halstead in season 7, especially if the rumors about his character prove to be true.
