What happened to Gabby Dawson on Chicago Fire?
Gabriela ‘Gabby’ Dawson (Monica Raymund) left a big impression during her six seasons on Chicago Fire. The bubbly character captivated coworkers and fans alike, and her departure was one of the saddest and most unexpected the show has had to date.
Dawson’s farewell and subsequent (albeit brief) return has left some fans confused, however. Is the character going to be coming back in a full-time capacity at some point? Is she going to appear in a recurring cameo part? Or is she done with Firehouse 51 for good?
Here’s the rundown on what happened with Dawson and the actress who plays her.
Will Dawson return to Chicago Fire?
The writing was on the wall when Dawson decided to move back to Puerto Rico at the end of season 5. The decision signified the end of her marriage with Casey (Jesse Spencer) and her tenure at the firehouse. Her appearance in the season 7 episode “A Closer Eye” felt like the end of an era for the show, and the weight of it was supported by Raymund’s offscreen comments.
The actress told the Chicago Tribune that she wanted to move on to different things. “I knew my six-year contract was coming to an end and I felt like I was hungry to explore a different role, a different story. I wanted to explore a different world”, she explained. “I was ready to create my home and kind of plant some roots in Los Angeles.”

Just when it seemed as though fans had seen the last of Dawson, she reappeared in the season 8 episode “Best Friend Magic”. The episode sees Dawson return to Chicago on a volunteer basis, and make an effort to reconnect with Casey. The pair don’t get back together, but Dawson does leave the door open for Casey to join her in Puerto Rico, leaving things on a much happier note than seasons prior.
According to Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas, Raymund was hesitant to return. “I had to text Monica and beg her to come back again”, he told Entertainment Tonight. “We were thrilled that she did it.” The experience proved to be a positive one for the actress, however, and she has free reign to come back should she ever choose.
Fans shouldn’t expect to see Dawson return in a full-time capacity, but given her close bond with Casey and her pattern of returning to Chicago for brief periods of time, it’s nice to know the door is open for her to return.
