Dr. Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) has always been a rock on Chicago Med. She’s helped corral the drama and trauma in the ED, and she’s currently staging a sting operation with Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss). She believes that newcomer Dr. Matt Cooper (Michael Rady) is pawning overpriced cardiac monitors on patients, and has made it her mission to take Cooper down.

That being said, Goodwin has hit a snag early in season 7. While in the midst of her plans with Dr. Halstead, the boss became dizzy and disoriented. She discovered that her blood sugar levels were alarmingly high, and she must increase her diabetes medication to keep it under control.

Here’s a rundown of Goodwin’s health, and whether fans should be concerned for her future in season 7.

Dr. Goodwin health on Chicago Fire

Goodwin’s diabetes was not part of the original character, but actress S. Epatha Merkerson asked that it be incorporated into the show in an effort to shine a light on a largely underseen condition.

Merkerson suffers from type 2 diabetes in real life, and she told Shadow and Act that she wanted to shine a light on the nuances of living with said condition. “To bring the disease up in the show through my character allows us to see firsthand what people go through when they have type 2 diabetes”, she explained. “I think whenever you have the opportunity to voice something like that, it’s a public service to the community.”

Goodwin has alluded to her diabetes in seasons past, but season 7 looks to be the first time that it will pose a serious issue. The character is told that her blood sugar is continuing to climb despite her healthy regiment, and is that stress can contribute to the high levels. When asked if anything has been stressing her out, Halstead pops up with information about Dr. Cooper.

It’s looks like Goodwin will spend the duration of season 7 juggling her undercover plans with her need to avoid stress. Things might get tricky, especially if Cooper proves to be a worthy opponent. Hopefully Goodwin can strike a balance and prioritize her health, though it’ll be tough to keep her condition hidden from the various doctors who work under her.
